Account book and periodical subscription record, 1861-1882.

This volume records the business activities of the United States Post Office in Pottsville, PA from 1861-1882. The records show weekly and monthly sales of stamps and envelopes, employee wages, accounts of dead letters, transfers of cash, stamps, and envelopes between other post offices in the district, money collected from other post offices, and drafts sent and received. Quarterly returns are calculated in the ledger, and corrections made by the auditor from the U.S. Postal Department are indicated in red ink. Of particular interest are the records of periodical subscriptions and their subscribers. An alphabetical, tabbed index of serials' names corresponds to entries under the periodical title. Records for these serials contain title, place of publication, frequency of publication, subscription price, and a list of local subscribers. Entries are marked and dated when a subscription is discontinued by the patron or by the publisher.
